The non-existence of institutional facts

چکیده

Abstract That certain paper bills have monetary value, that Vladimir Putin is the president of Russia, and Prince Philip husband Queen Elizabeth II: such facts are commonly called ‘institutional facts’ (IFF). IFF are, by definition, exist virtue collective recognition (where can be direct or indirect). The standard view tacit belief really exist. In this we argue, however, they do not—they just well-established illusions. We confront realism about with six criteria existence, three established less so but highly intuitive. argue all tell against existence IFF. An obvious objection to non-realism since people’s behaviour clearly reflects IFF, denying their leaves an explanatory gap. reject argument introducing a variant so-called ‘Thomas Theorem,’ which says when people collectively recognize fact as existing, largely behave accordingly, regardless whether exists not.

Brute Facts, Social Facts, and Institutional Facts

Geographic regions (henceforth, regions for short) are spatially extended pieces of (near) earth surface that share some aspect of similarity across their extents. The most fundamental aspect of similarity shared within a region is "locational similarity"-proximity. But regions nearly always share common thematic content or activity too. That is, regions are defined not just spatially but accor...

The (non-)existence of perfect codes in Lucas cubes

A Fibonacci string of length $n$ is a binary string $b = b_1b_2ldots b_n$ in which for every $1 leq i < n$, $b_icdot b_{i+1} = 0$. In other words, a Fibonacci string is a binary string without 11 as a substring. Similarly, a Lucas string is a Fibonacci string $b_1b_2ldots b_n$ that $b_1cdot b_n = 0$. For a natural number $ngeq1$, a Fibonacci cube of dimension $n$ is denoted by $Gamma_n$ and i...

Analysis of the Use of Events and States as Brute Facts in Modelling of Institutional Facts

Although the institutional dimension of a multi-agent system can be affected directly by the actions of the agents, it can be also affected by facts originating in the environment or even in the institution. In a previous work, we propose a model, language and its interpreter to specify the institutional consequences of both events and states from environment and institution. This paper analyse...
